Meanwhile…In Soviet Florida: 1990 Trabant 1.1
When I get a tip from one of DT’s regular tippers (you guys know who I’m talking about) I always pay attention. But when I get a tip from TWO of DT’s regulars…well…I have two choices — one is to drop everything and buy the car — and the second is to write it up. My wife would kill me if I bought a Trabant…so I’ll have to write it up for one of the other future divorcees in the audience. Find this 1990 Trabant 1.1 offered for $3800 in Naples, FL via craigslist. Tip from Dascpcu and Rock On!

Actually, drive East German, not Russian. In the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" department, I had the opportunity to get several of these for nearly nothing in 1991 in West Germany, after the Fall of the Wall. Problem was, the 25-year rule for importation applied back then, too. So, finding a Trabbi that fit the rules was difficult. Most were late '70s and early '80s cars. Very few '66 and older, so I passed on them. For quite some time, you could find a very nice Trabant for less than $500, ready to ship to the US. Not so much, now.
There was one in Guatemala (yes, Guatemala…). I don't know what it had under the hood, but it was very, very quick…
Thanks a lot Vince, now I have this song stuck in my head!
