Grand Coupe: 2015 BMW 650i xDrive MSport F06

Since the early 1970s, BMW has used nomenclature to describe their vehicles that included displacement of each vehicle in the title -a BMW 325 should have a 2.5 liter inline-6…etc. But starting sometime in the 1980s BMW started to mangle that clean naming convention — the BMW 325e, for instance, came with a 2.7 liter engine tuned for efficiency. Future degradation of naming included 3.0 liter turbo models festooned with 335 and 340 badges, to the point that the badge on the back of a BMW was 99% marketing and 1% informative. This next car has a BMW 650i xDrive MSport badge on the back, but inexplicably is equipped with 4 doors. The 50i should mean it has a 5 liter V12…? No. Try a twin turbo 4.4 liter V8 (good for 444 horsepower) and the xDrive is codename for all-wheel-drive. Finally, the M-Sport is yet another example of BMW putting their legendary M-Badge on a car that maybe has 1/10th of the performance/technology of an actual M car. Despite all of these complaints, for the asking price, this thing is a millionty times better than whatever econobox you could get from your Kia dealer. Find this 2015 BMW 650i xDrive MSport offered for $23,595 or make-offer located in Charlotte, NC via ebay motors.

I’ve been shopping some BMWs like this in the high teen, low 20’s range. I need something much more reliable than my Jeep has been. I’m keeping the Jeep so I will have an unreliable backup. Anyone have any experience with BMWs in the 2015-2020 rage as far as reliability? Seems like a much better choice luxury wise but if it’s in the shop every month…I’ll take that Kia/Honda/Toyota.
The team at ReDriven has bad things to say about the optional V8 engine in these. I have no first-hand experience with these cars and ReDriven is covering the Australian market; I’m not sure if the North American V8s have the same problems. Here’s the video where they review the 6-series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdg8ZtoBHIA
Chris, I would reach out to Joe at The M Shop in Los Angeles at joeb@themshop.com. He’s been my BMW whisperer for nearly two decades. Elliot
