There was a time when the Chrysler TC by Maserati was just a bad joke. But now I find myself smiling when I see one of these like it is a funny joke. It wasn’t the first time that the passage of time made something obscene into iconic (see Eiffel Tower, Pontiac Aztec, etc) but it is the first time I’ve thought about owning a 90s Chrysler. Wondering what this peculiar hardtop convertible is? The Chrysler TC by Maserati…produced for only 3 years (1989-1991) as a joint collaboration between Chrysler and Maserati and only 1,900 cars were produced in 1990! What makes it special besides it looks that turn heads everywhere it goes? Within minutes you can go from hardtop to convertible truly defying those cold winter days to enjoying those warm summer days in the lap of luxury.
One of the most distinguishing features on the TC is the detachable hardtop with circular, beveled-glass porthole opera windows! All black exterior with ginger color interior sporting hand-stitched Italian leather including the dash, door panels and plush, comfortable seats and tufted center armrest. Inside doorjambs are finished with SOLID stainless steel panels and sill plates.
The service work that was JUST COMPLETED at well-known, local European specialist service center Evans Automotive included new front brakes, rotors, calipers, and hoses, brake fluid flush, a new Interstate battery, hood struts, oil pressure sender, transmission cooler hose, a fresh oil and filter change, and 4 brand new Sentury touring (40,000 mile) tires! The rear brakes are just like new. Additionally, local car audio specialists Columbus Car Audio just replaced all of the original speakers with brand new Rockford Fosgate two way speakers!
Paper documented service history as well – other noteworthy recent items include: September 2019 a new thermostat and gasket, August 2019 $5000 spent at Bob Caldwell Chrysler to replace the valve cover gasket and cam plugs, throttle body cleaning, serpentine belt, air filter, three motor mounts, and new fuel lines. A compression test was also performed with results of 145 PSI across all cylinders. May 2016 new timing belt, water pump, and component kit, platinum spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, left front cv driveshaft. Super service records!
This beauty is turn key, ready to drive, and needs nothing. Everything works just as it should on this distinctive automobile. It has 3 complete sets of keys, the original spare tire and tools, original owner’s manual, original zippered tool and first aid kit, and I even have a copy of the original title that was issued on the 5th July 1990. MSRP in 1990 was $35,000!
This Maserati sports a black paint scheme with a ginger leather interior with a simulated wood grain dash. Under the hood is a 3.0L Mitsubishi V-6 attached to a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard features on this loaded TC include air conditioning, AM/FM cassette Infinity radio, power windows, power locks, 6-way power seats, power mirrors, power steering, power brakes, tilt wheel, cruise, and much more. The struts and shock absorbers were specially designed for the car by Fichtel and Sachs, and a Teves anti-lock braking system was standard. The special wheels were made in Italy by the Formula One supplier Fondmetal.
The body and paint are in super condition for its age and look great all the way around…the paint has a beautiful glossy shine! The interior is beautiful and in excellent condition – non-smoker as well. Watch my videos to see just how nice it really is!

Rumour has it that Chrysler lost money on everyone one of these they sold.
I think the LeBaron’s exterior styling came out a bit better, but the TC’s interior is nicer. I’m not sure if the wild DOHC 2.2 (more powerful) or the 3.0 (you can actually find parts for it) would be the more desirable engine.
For a brief moment I had an 89 LeBaron coupe with the 4cy turbo. For what it was it was pretty fast. I ended up throwing rods after going around a corner too fast and starving the engine of oil. It’s interior was fairly plush maroon velour type stuff, exterior was a decent looking maroon too.
Had one with the same year and engine myself. Mine was a Canadian car (no A/C and metric gauges!) I’d picked up for $900, and rust-related issues eventually killed it. The velour seats may not have been luxurious, but they were some of the most comfortable car seats I’ve had.
