E24 Ways to Class: 1989 BMW 635CSI

The BMW E24 6-series is one of those ‘in-betweener’ 80s classics; it isn’t quite a collectible classic, but unrestored examples aren’t a bad way to get into a European classic. That shark nose and sweet styling were penned by the legendary Paul Bracq, and mechanical parts are rugged but performance-oriented. Seller’s description
1989 BMW 635csi powered by a 3.4-liter M30 inline-six pair to a 5-Speed transmission in Alpine white with Black leather interior.

This 635csi was originally a 4 speed automatic, which was converted in 2021 to a 5speed manual using a Getrag 265 transmission.

Over $15,000 in service receipts has been spent on this car over the past 3 years. Most recent work was installing a new Catalytic converter, install new coolant expansion tank, new heater core, driver door mechanism repaired, High pressure steering line remanufactured, and an oil service in May.

The car drives straight and brakes well. The clutch is stiff and has a great low bite point. The stick feels great with the short shifter, feels crisp going into gear. Throttle is sharp, and very responsive and the exhaust note sounds awesome! Has a great note, without being overly loud. It has low growls at lower RPM’s (sounds almost like a v8) but screams when you get on it. Oh and the A/C blows cold 👍

All that being said, this car is far from perfect, and does need some love. Such as, the Odometer does not work and total mileage is unknown, the paint is original but the clear coat is peeling, and there are some dings around the car. The car ran amazingly however began sputtering/ misfiring at low RPM’s. It was taken to two of our mechanics, who were unable to replicate the problem when the car was dropped off, thus never corrected.

I wish I could continue to work on this car, but Im in the process of fixing our house, so between that, a 2 year old and 5 year old, time is a hot commodity 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Somebody will be getting a killer deal!
