Dusty But Not Rusty: 1967 Volkswagen Beetle Type 1

One of my only automotive acquisition regrets is the time I turned down an offer for a free Volkswagen Beetle. It was actually two Beetles, but the parts were in boxes and the body was separated from the pan and my ability to assembled one working Beetle from the assorted boxes/bags/piles was questionable given the other projects I was also nursing along…so the Beetle went to someone else to store the pieces of another automotive jigsaw puzzle. However, today’s next feature seems like a much shorter putt to get your Vee-Dub itch scratched. Find this 1967 Volkswagen Beetle offered for $3,000 in Vernonia, OR via craigslist. Tip from JB1025.

Score! That’s a good deal on a diamond in the rough if the engine turns. Even if the engine is junk, it’s still not too bad for everything else. Good thing it was stored inside for those 30 years. This is the kind of project I’d jump on in a heartbeat. Nothing is impossible to find for this car, even the ’67-specific stuff.
Bugs pop up on AutoBidMaster with some frequency, for under a grand–I can’t help but look. This one is in nice condition…hard for me to realize that gone are the days of old MGs, VWs, Sunbeams, and old 1950s Mercedes 190 sedans parkwd under a tarp for $500 all over the place.
Old VW guy back in Central VA where I grew up–name was Sherman, must have been 150 years old. He had a field of VWs Bugs, Ghias, Vans, Things. Everyone took their VWs to him. He was a few miles from the MG guy. There used to be those guys out there.
