Drive Like Sherman McCoy: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400SEL W140

Remember when Mercedes-Benz built big sophisticated pieces of rolling art that cost a bucket of cash because they provided quality and experience that was unmatched. They had interiors that would survive serious abuse without showing wear (just look at those 30 year old MBTex seats!!) and instead of stupid touchscreens they had pop-up (lockable with a key!) cell phone dial pad in the dash and arm-rest hidden phone handle. Luxury! Performance! Sophistication! Depreciation? Find this 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400SEL offered for $5900 in Beverly Hills, CA via craigslist.

The last of the Real Mercedes. After these they began chasing Lexus instead of staying true to themselves and turning into overpriced, under engineered unreliable ego props. That Mercedes supposedly lost money on all the W140 S Class cars probably had something to do with that though.
Bonfire of the Vanities- great book but the movie sucked.
This is probably one of the best used car deals to come along in awhile. The W140 400SEL was arguably the best of the greatest era of Mercedes Benz. One of these went on BAT for 11k, and it was not as well kept as this one appears to be. These were complex cars, but the cars that came later are the ones that gave MB a bad rep for durability and high mileage reliability.
@DailyTurismo The W140 cars only came with leather in the U.S. as far as I know. These do not have MBTex vinyl but even so MB’s leather at this time was top notch. It does hold up well, just not as well as their famous vinyl.
Wow. I looked at those seats and thought there is no way it could be leather because they have aged so little. But, it does look like real cow. I guess those German cows have nice skin.
