Class B Lemons Car: 2000 Ford Mustang

I’ve been around a few 24 Hours of LeMons race cars. I’ve built a few. Raced a few. Blew up a few. Thought about crashing some. I even managed to drive one to the top step of the podium at a LeMons race, and another car saw the chequered flag at a Champcar (previously Chumpcar) race…so I’m confident when I see a good deal for a $500 racing car. This next thing is what I would describe as a good Class B LeMons car. Class A 24 Hours of LeMons cars are purpose-built machines with hundreds of horsepower and cheater suspensions. They flaunt the $500 “car plus performance mods” aspect of the rules in more ways than you could possibly imagine — LM7 V8 swapped BMW 3-series with M3 suspension…check. Toyota MR2 with a hot-rodded Kawasaki 1 liter superbike engine sitting in the driver’s seat…been there. However, if you want to get into racing, you could go into the Class B section of LeMons, which consists of cars that closely resemble the first few seasons of 24 Hours of LeMons racing. The trick is to convince the judges/organizers that your car belongs in Class B, but have something fast/fun. Class C cars are diesel-powered Reliant Robins and other such horrible machines…yuck…stay away.

Back to today’s feature car — this thing is a 3.8 liter V6 powered SN-95 generation Mustang that pushes 190 horsepower into a 5-speed manual gearbox. But the real value in this car is the professionally welded roll cage, fire suppression system, cool suit, seat, harness, removeable steering wheel, and thousands of dollars of additional pieces of safety equipment. This car raced in the 2024 Buttonwill race — came in 39th overall out of 93 entries — despite being driven by a rookie team with a fast lap of 2:31 (versus the fastest lap of 2:13 from a Class A monster). This car’s performance was notable enough to win the coveted “judge’s choice” award and get a shout out in the Lemons youtube wrap up video. I think in my time behind the wheel, I’ve been on teams that have gotten the overall win, “People’s Choice,” “People’s Curse,” “I Got Screwed,” and “Most Likely to Leave Altamont in an Ambulance”…but never the Judge’s Choice. Expect this car to come with good vibes and an easy entry into Class B.
