Big Pimpin! 1976 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham

The history of using the term “Brougham” in car names is an interesting one. In the early 19th century, there was a Scot named Lord Henry Brougham (1st Baron of Brougham and Vaux)…pronounced BROH-um. Anyway, the Baron built some fancy carriages in a style that included forward facing window in an enclosed cab, and the style was copied by early 20th-century car builders as a “Brougham.” A half-century later, various American carmakers used the Brougham term for the upper trim level of various models. These land yachts never cease to amaze me. My best friend’s Mom had a mint 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V when we were in high school in the late 80’s. She would let us use it on the weekends sometimes (which i still can’t believe she allowed) and driving a car roughly 19 ft. long was an experience… and a “coupe” to boot!? Potholes and other road imperfections were nonexistent as the car felt like it was floating. Body roll was plentiful.
