AMC-Jeep 4.0 Power: 1979 Jaguar XJ6L
This next car has me scratching my head. And my leg. And my back…oh no, that might be fleas or bedbugs…but I’m still totally and completely and utterly flummoxed by this next car. On the one hand, I hate it when people shove carburated small blocks into classic inline-6 powered Jags, but I don’t mind so much when they keep them inline-6 powered…but…an AMC 4.0 liter straight six from a Jeep? it should run forever, and it wont take an hour to change the acc. belts..my only issue is, how did he resist the temptation to put a 5spd in it?
Nice swap. Jeep engine has 14 more horsepower stock and 16 lb-ft more torque. The 5 speed would be fun, plus parts are probably half the price to keep the Jeep engine running. Someone should tell David Tracy about this.
Always thought a Vortec 4200 would be a good choice.
I was all ready to hate this until the under hood shot. That engine looks right at home in that bay. Agreed on the parts availability. Not sure how much Clifford stuff could be brought into play, but even with increased daily drive-ability, the SOUND would be the big disappointment with this.
I'm pretty sure that all straight six engines have the same firing order so the sound at the tailpipe will be dependent upon the type of headers used and how free flowing the exhaust system is. Intake noise probably is nonexistent. This engine swap, if done professionally is nothing but win though I'm sure Jaaaaaaag purists will clutch at their pearls.
Except in that era Jag 6, there's nothing that will take the place of the sound of that very long cam chain running laps; or for the distinctive appearance of the head. Replacing Jag engines with 250 cid Ford 6 cyl was very common in the late 60's and early 70's but their sound was distinctly different than that of the Jaguar inline.
It's a win for drive-ability, but there will be sacrifices.
I'm with you – my first thought was that this seemed to be a terrible idea, but it looks like a very good execution from the photos.
Lots to like here. Nice interior, slightly scruffy exterior, and what appears to be a very clean engine swap. It looks like it actually belongs there! The sound would be my minor concern. A Jag Six has its own, very unique sound. The Jeep engine with the (presumably original) Jaguar exhaust might have a different sound. A minor concern, really.
All it needs now is four wheel drive and a 12" lift!
