Aircooled Frunkadelic: 1970 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback

You guys all know that I’m a sucker for a car with a fastback roofline…and now I’m not talking about modern 4-door “coupes” — I’m looking at cars like the Mustang Fastback or the first generation Barracuda. But this car has one more feature that makes me salivate — a frunk. Yes, the front trunk and fastback is the ultimate combination that’ll let me ignore the eye booger colored paint. Find this 1970 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback offered for $6800 in West Sacramento, CA via craigslist.

From the seller:
1970 VW Type III Fastback
condition: good
cylinders: 4 cylinders
fuel: gas
odometer: 65000
title status: clean
transmission: manual
This is a rust free, mechanically sound original paint Kansas Beige Type III Fastback.

Pros: This car is an extremely strong runner and just had about $1,000 worth of work done at the Kombi Haus in tune up, carb cleaning and adjustment, valve job, shift bushings and more. Her tires are near new. Her 1600 is strong with Dual Dellorto Carbs. She has a new dash and new front seat covers.
Cons: Since putting in her shift bushings, she’s popping out in 4th gear at higher RPMs. This just requires you to hold her there, sadly a common problem for these older VWs.

She needs a rear seat cover, but the lead times are presently long. She has the original radio and 8 track.
There aren’t a lot of these still around and their value keeps escalating. We don’t need to sell her and we may entertain trades. Clean and clear title in my name.

after all that copy about the frunk, i did a double take on the included pic. “did the seller just have the home supply store dump a load of heating wood pellets, guinea pig food or some other beige particulate in the _frunk_?” only when i saw the lighter triangle did i realize this is a hunk of hideous pattern carpet covering the metal. fun.
The coolest thing are the bending windows. They are fixed in the front, pop out in the back and bend in the middle. Much cooler than those Citroen folding windows.
If this was a Notchback I’d be elbowing people in the face in my haste to go buy it.
I so wanted one of these to make a mini-Cadzilla out of when the ZZTop car debuted.
Still kind of do…
