6-Speed Funbox: 2008 Acura TL Type S
There was a time when Acura was the go-to brand for Fast & Furious crowd looking for something cheap to modify…but sometime in the early 2000’s Acura abandoned its focus on light weight simplicity in exchange for complex slushbox powered boats…BUT today we’ve got something modern from Honda’s luxury brand that bucks the trend and combines a manual gearbox with a limited slip differential putting 286 horsepower to the front wheels. I originally mis-took this for the smaller Civic-based TLS. Price seemed optimistic. Then I saw the V-6 and realized this is the Accord-based model. Probably lots of fun with a 6-speed. I have driven the competing Mazda 6 GT (even a wagon version!) with the V-6 and manual. Quite a hoot.
I don’t think I ever saw one of these in the 6MT that wasn’t this metallic gunmetal color. When I was looking to buy my First Real Adult Car this exact spec was on my short list. Would have bought it if the salesman hadn’t completely blown me off, seeing as he was solely interested in moving inventory and the 3 pedal TL was going to be special order only. His loss. Momentum BMW was happy to spec out a titanium 330ci that put a smile on my face every time I walked to the driveway…a smile that only faded after gazing upon the Imola ZHP that simply had to get got.
Always wondered how much torque steer the TL conveyed…seem to remember some gripes in the press about that.
I drive this car's plainer sister, a 2006 Accord V6 manual sedan. I was looking for a TL-S when I bought it but the ones I found were all priced like this one, about double the Accord's price. I was shocked when I found my Accord for sale locally.
Torque steer on the Accord is not an issue, I would imagine adding the Acura's LSD wouldn't hurt.
Known issues: 3rd gear likes to grind and pop out on these 6-speeds. Fixed by switching to GM Syncromesh fluid. The Type-S wheels bend very easily. Expect a solid ride with a fair bit of understeer.
