5k: Fiberglassed: 1983 Blakely Bernardi

The Blakely Bernardi is neo-classic designed kit car vaguely reminiscent of an MG TD that uses a Ford Pinto, Mercury Bobcat or Mustang II donor car. The kit body and frame were built in Blakely Auto Works Princeton, WI factory and sold for almost $9k in 1984 — and that was before you added the donor car and assembly cost.  Find this 1983 Blakely Bernardi offered here on craigslist for $6,900 located in Overland Park, KS. Tip from tian647.

Drive around in the Bernardi and you will get some inquisitive stares from car guys, but the wheels/fenders and headlights just scream kit-car!!  Most folks will assume it was some custom re-body on another kit, but you’ll know the Bernardi uses a fiberglass-foam-fiberglass sandwich and should be slightly more refined versus the average home brew car.

Forward motivation comes from a Pinto 2.3 liter inline-4 mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox.   Power is going to be in the 90 horsepower range, but the Pinto OHC inline-4 was the basis for the 200+ horsepower turbo engine in the Mustang SVO and Turbo T-Bird, so modifying for more power should be easy.
