5k: Coupe BugVille: 1971 Volkswagen Beetle
If you liked the RX-8 powered Volkswagen Beetle from the other day, you’ve probably got some issues, but that is for a professional to help you solve — but here at DT we can only offer help in the form of another custom Beetle. Find this 1971 Volkswagen Beetle here on eBay bidding for $2,550 reserve-not-met with $8,000 buy-it-now, located in Jamestown, NY.
It shouldn’t be surprising that this car is located in Jamestown, home of the Crescent Wrench and the automatic voting machine. A Crescent wrench is something that is okay for everything but great at nothing, and your vote is counted the same as everyone’s, but really worthless by itself, and a custom Volkswagen Beetle is cool as a whole, but horrible for any particular driving task.
What we’ve got here is…well…I’m not entirely sure. It appears to be a GIANT radiator covering some kind of V8..which upon closer examination looks to be transversely mounted. Yup, it is a Cadillac HT(High Technology)-4100 V8, fed with a carburetor in the back middle of a Beetle. Now, I’ve seen everything.
The 4.1 liter iron block with alloy head V8 was good for an pitiful 135 horsepower when new, but the version in the Allante was good for as much as 170 hp, and in any spec the thing pushes out a decent amount of twist.

I think that is the same motor my Dad had in his caddy known for popping head gaskets !
