2k: VW Bus 2.0: 1989 Toyota Van 4X4
When you look at the state of the Volkswagen Bus market today, you’ve got to ask yourself is this the same hippie van from back in the day? Today a typical Bus owner is not a stoned war protester, but a mid-level manager at a Fortune 500 company — what happened? The truth is that today, if you want to find what hippies (or the modern day equivalent) drive, you’ve got to find another form of cheap transportation that offers frugal motoring, room for
bong fabrication art supplies, and a place to sleep — all for a minimal buy-in. Specifically, you’ll need to look for a late model minivan. Find this 1989 Toyota Van 4X4 currently bidding for $2,950 on ebay, located in Falls City, NE with less than 1 day to go.
The Toyota Van was called the MasterAce in Japan, the Space
Cruiser in Europe, the Tarango in
Australia, but here in North America we got something called simply the “Van.” What a total crock of crap, but the perfect name for a depreciated and unloved vehicle for 21st century hippies to drive…sort of like Bus.
This Van is powered by a 2.2-liter 4Y-E engine rated at 102 hp and mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. This is a 4X4 model so it means the car has skid plates, but being an auto it does not have the manual only low range transfer case.

Must know if it had the factory ice maker option….anyone else remember this?

~ Yes indeed. A rather early [primative] 12volt heat pump thing! Beer cooler only, bring your own ice.
Yep, factory ice box was cool, but if you didn't start out with the frozen ice cube tray in your home freezer they would never freeze. Ice maker (fridge)used the AC system for chilling I believe. I had a 1988 w/5 sp manual and the 2 speed transfer case about 15 years ago, sold it with something like 236k on the original motor. Every time I see one of these come up I always race to find out if it has the manual tranny, but haven't seen any in a long time. Keep looking for the holy grail, which would be a manual transmission, 4wd cargo van version to build up . -Josh
Josh: here's your unicorn…4×4 5-spd, 195k miles, asking $8k (!) in Santa Barbara. Looks like it started life as a cargo van.
