10k: Scirocky Balboa: 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco Mk 2

No car better epitomizes Marlon Brando’s famous line from Oscar winning 1954 Elia Kazan epic On The Waterfront; ” I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am” than the Giorgetto Giugiaro penned Volkswagen Scirocco.  The sporty looking coupe was launched to high hopes in 1974 as a sporty alternative to the Golf/Rabbit/Jetta, but eventually died at the hands of the better and more usable GTi.  Find this 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco for sale in Fremont, CA for $9,500 via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

No matter how many comments pop up below with stories of Sciroccos being faster than Vettes and how scientific studies have shown Scirocco ownership is more effective than Enzyte – we all need to face facts.  The Scirocco disappeared from US showrooms in 1992 and you can still buy a GTi…which should only make your Scirocco collection that much sweeter – because rare is cool…right?

The seller of this “emmaculate” Scirocco fails to include any good exterior shots but as described the car looks to be somewhat of a restoration.  The idea of late 1980s cars being “restored” sounds funny, but this is now a 26 year old car and will have needs.  The 1.8 liter 16-valve engine is good for 123 horsepower which is put to the front wheels via a 5-speed gearbox.  It won’t be fast by any stretch of the imagination, but purchasing a vintage Scirocco is going to be an event heavily fueled by emotion or booze.
