What is it? 1983 GP Madison Coupe Kit Car
I’m not sure what I’m looking at…in the slightest. But I love it. The curves, the wire wheels, the tiny rear window. This is a GP Madison kit car, probably Ford-based rather than VW-based that many used, likely using Ford Cortina/Pinto OHC four-cylinder running gear. Hopefully so, because it’s going to be a challenge just to get in it if you’re taller than the average infant. The reward better be worth the embarrassing contortions.
Looks like they were going for a Packard motif with that grille shape. Anyone recognize that engine? Might give some clue to the underpinnings. Oddest part of all with this is that someone apparently went to the trouble of shipping it across the pond from Ol’ Blighty.
It’s a Lima aka Pinto engine, but if those aren’t enough beans a 5.0 V8 should fit in the same space.
Hi, I can give you some background on the Madison as I built it in 1983 in Wiltshire, England. The body, as you know, is a GP Madison designed by Neville Tricket. It is normally a VW Beetle based kit, but this one used a Ford Cortina 2000 E as its donor vehicle. The front and rear lights (the ones on the passenger seat) are VW Beetle and the very old basic looking heater unit is from an original Mini, although you never needed the heater on as it was always hot inside the car. I had some great times in the old girl, including a trip to the 24 hour race at Le Man in France. If anybody wants to know anymore, let me know.
