W201 Euro Style: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190D
The W201 Mercedes-Benz C-Class was sold from 1982 through 1993 as a smaller version of the big W124 E-Class sedan. It was available with various engines, including the 2.3-16V Cosworth (an M3 competitor), various inline-4 and inline-6 engines, but today’s version is a 2.2 liter non-turbo diesel with 72 horsepower that could propel the 190D to an alleged 100mph top speed. These cars have a wonderful interior….except for that school bus steering wheel. These massive tillers don’t even contain first generation airbag! I’m not sure why M-B continues to make such large centered wheels when every other manufacturer has continued to streamline their steering wheels. It detracts from one of the nicest interiors of the 1980’s.
Power steering ? or would a hard left/right stall it out? Simplicity. We had it here at one time, remember?
It looks like a time capsule. A close friend had this same car with a 5-speed, and it was sublime—right up until it began running poorly. He sold it at a firesale price to a mutually known “friend” mechanic/con artist who’d already surmised the problem was likely a clogged fuel filter. He then fixed it for $3 and rubbed that fact in my friend’s face.
Sigh.

I lived in Germany for 5 years and then traveled back and forth a few more times until 2023….and yep, the M-B E-class is one of the more popular taxis across the EU and pretty much your only choice in Germany proper.
Back windows that don’t roll down definitely point to a taxi special.
The more I view this I keep thinking ‘mechanics trafficking bait’ car. This is less than a common months rent and looks too good for 1984.
