W124 Turbo Diesel: 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Wagon

The W124’s greatest asset is that it still feels like a Mercedes from the era when the E-Class designation meant something very specific: heavy doors, excellent seats, restrained styling, superb highway manners, and the vague impression that somebody in Stuttgart expected the car to remain in service until the sun burns out. A used driver condition W124 will need regular maintenance on various parts (I should know, I’ve got one), but the turbo diesel version exchanges some of the wacky Bosch KE-Jetronic issues of the gasoline engine for aluminum head on a diesel engine issues from the OM603. But fuel economy should be good and with 143 turbocharged diesel horsepower, this should be one cool ride. Highly desired and sought-after model and year, the only year in the North American market when the W124 (technically S124) 300TD wagon was offered with the 3.0L inline-6 turbo-diesel engine.
