Turbocharged Luxury: 1984 Buick Riviera T-Type
The Buick Riviera appeared on the automotive landscape in 1963 as a personal luxury coupe on the E-body platform (later shared with the Eldorado and Toronado), but in rear-drive only configuration. A few decades later the turbocharged version of the Riviera shared its V6 with Buick’s Regal cousin (and the LeSabre had a turbo V6 version too), but the Grand National has a cult following and culty prices to boot. In the Riviera you can get the 185 horsepower 3.8 V6 and not pay a big premium. Find this 1984 Buick Riviera T-Type offered for $5500 in Cape Coral, FL via craigslist. Tip from Dascpcu.

Not as fast as the later generation intercooled '86/'87 models, plus weighed 400 lbs. more than the Regal T-Type/Grand Nationals, but still peppy for it's time.
The 3.8 Turbo 6 was actually a little peppier than the 5.0 V8 in Oldsmobile Toronado.
I had an '83 Toronado and it drove decently, I chose it over the turbo Buick because it had better mid-range response. From standstill, just stomp on the Buick's go pedal and it would eke a slight win over the Olds in a stop-light challenge. Not exactly what they were designed for 🙂 As a highway cruiser, they all (Cad/Buick/Olds)were pretty comfortable even with the Olds/Cadillac's faux "couch pillow" seats.
Those couch pillow seats were epic. My best friend's Mom had a 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V "Diamond Jubilee" edition. When I was 16 years old, she gave me the keys and a stern warning to be careful as it was my first time to drive by myself with my friends as my '77 VW Scirocco was not out of the shop yet. What a ride! B)
