Thng of Beauty: 1973 Volkswagen Thing

The Type 181 Volkswagen Thing is not a pretty car…but it is pretty useful. The thing started life in the 1960s as an off-road capable light vehicle designed for West German military use, but VW built a civilian version a few years later. Today we’ve got an example that looks like it’s ready for the West German circus. Find this 1973 Volkswagen Thing offered for $6,500 in La Porte, IN via braceforit merkurybook.

Seller’s Description
1973 Thing, shorten by approximately 30 inches. Wheelbase is now approximately 65 inches. I’ve had it for about 5 years and don’t drive it much, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I bought it shortened. Runs good but needs a few things like gas gauge doesn’t work, turn signals work but the indicator in the speedometer flashes once and then stays off, odometer doesn’t work (currently reads 43109). Shifting between 1st and 2nd is tricky, if not careful it can grind. Not sure if when the shift rod was shortened it wasn’t done correctly or what. It has a great turning radius. Storage issues and not driving it very much is the reason I am trying to sell it. Cash only, not interested in any trades. Located in LaPorte, IN. 46350
