The Meast: 1993 Mazda Miata

Some builds are labors of love. Others are assembled with sheet metal screws, coat hangers, and dreams. This next custom “Miata” is the latter—a truly one-of-a-kind mutant roadster sporting a ’52 Chevy pickup hood, ’32 Ford front fenders, what might be ’36 Chrysler rears, and a Ford Taurus wagon trunk lid, all precariously united over a Miata chassis/drivetrain. The hood is secured with two chains, two strings, and two coat hangers, because symmetry matters. The build may have looked good during the Bush administration (you pick which one…), but time has not been good to the Meast. One-of-a-kind custom car. Runs well – street legal!Like a classic Jaguar, Austin Healey or Porsche, but reliable because it’s a Mazda Miata.
Crafted using sheet metal screws and antique car parts – NOT professionally done. Front hood is held down by 2 chains, 2 strings and 2 coat hangers.
Front fenders from a 1932 Ford
Rear fenders possibly from a 1936 Chrysler
Trunk lid from a Ford Taurus wagon
Hood from a 1952 Chevy pickup truckDaily driver until three years ago. Engine rebuilt at 170,000 miles (now has 179,688 miles)
Starts and runs well, motor runs smooth. When the outside temperature goes above 80 degrees, the car runs a bit warm. It’s never overheated since the engine rebuild, but I suggest the new owner look into increasing air flow to keep the engine cool to specs. Radiator, water pump, thermostat all replaced and in great shape.
Brand new battery. All mechanical parts, engine, drive train, automatic transmission, cooling system, brakes, wheels etc are stock 1993 Mazda Miata.
The car’s been sitting for a couple years.
The photos that show it shiny black are from approximately 10 years ago when it had a fresh coat of paint. The shots on the road are a few years ago. The worst looking photos are from today.AC does not work and stereo is spotty – needs an antenna for radio.
Windshield is cracked. On planned non-operation status at the DMV for the past couple years.
(Salvaged) title in hand. Ready for new owner!

Good gracious. While I dig the wacky concept, the interior of this one is as horrifying as it gets.
The driver’s seat appears to be making angry faces at me. Luckily it looks like it’s just standard Miata parts.
For some reason I think it looks better with faded paint. Probably because black paint show bodywork no mercy – the shiny paint served to highlight problems with the bodywork. And the faded paint seems to work more as a rat rod where you don’t expect everything to line up.
Didn’t look too bad until I saw it is an automatic. I’m out!
