When the auction first launched for this next car, I sent an email to DT’s resident Volvo expert CFlo and asked him his thought on how much the car will sell for. His reply a week ago was spot on; maybe $6k to $7k? This diesel is super gutless. It’s literally the 6-cylinder version of the 1.6 NA diesel that was in your old Rabbit. Volvo bought the engines from VW. Imagine 50% more power than your old Rabbit! OMG 75hp. Did you ever ride in the one I had (blue 84 wagon)? It was awful. In CA this 1980 ebay wagon would be desirable because smog exempt, but not sure if anyone cares on the east coast. Nice condition though. Find this 1980 Volvo 245 DL Diesel bidding for $6,350 here on eBay with less than one day to go, located in Glen Burnie, MD.
The 1972 restyle of Ford’s Torino saw the model split into two styles, the basic Torino or the fancy Gran Torino, which featured a bass mouth grill and a few bonus luxury items. The big change under the skin for 1972 was the switch back to body-on-frame construction, but you could still get it in fastback, hardtop, sedan, or station wagon…the last of which is the proper way to build a Starsky & Hutch tribute car for the family man (or woman). Find this 1973 Ford Gran Torino Wagon offered for $6000 in Watsonville, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!
We’ve featured a few Chevrolet Vega Kammback wagons on DT in the past few months or so — and, thankfully, only one of them came equipped with the original cast iron boat anchors posing as engines that came from the factory when new. The Yenko Stinger tribute was neat, and the Lightning Rod equipped version was also interesting, but expensive, so today’s next example is cheap, cheap, cheap. Just the way I like ’em. Find this 1973 Chevrolet Vega Kammback Wagon offered for $5500 in Ferndale, WA via craigslist. Tip from JB1025.
The Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser needs no introduction around these parts, but I’ll give you the short version because I’m in a sharing mood. Oldsmobile was a brand founded by Ransom E Olds in 1897 and was folded into the general morters corporate machine in 1908. For the next 100 years, GM squeezed every last drop of blood from that turnip and shockingly managed to sell over a million Oldsmobiles in 1986. One of them was this full sized beasty called the Custom Cruiser. You can find them for about $4k around the interweb (in fact there is an ’89 example on eBay with Maroon paint and wood trim) but this next example seems especially nice for the asking price. Find this 1986 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser offered for $4400 in Medford, OR via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!
I’d love to post every tip that we get into the DT inbox (well, maybe not the strange “missed connection” links that Kaibeezy always sends in…those we’ll keep for…ummm…nevermind). The point is…I’d post every single tip if I had the time, but I’ve got a job and a mortgage and kids that need to be driven to soccer practice and Buicks that need maintenance and a tinnitus in my right ear from welding on a muffler filled with unburnt exhaust gases and then there are those “missed connections.” Regardless, despite that, incongruently, I’ve got to report an event on the level of a cosmic conjunction, similar to the 2020 Christmas star when Jupiter and Saturn were seen on top of each other late last year. This next car was tipped by not just one, but by two legends of car hunting, juggernauts of the DT tips line — imagine Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan teaming up to kick some ass at the same time. Yes, that level of awesome. This next car was tipped simultaneously by both FuelTruck and Rock On! Find this 1985 Volvo 240DL Wagon offered for $3,600 in Palo Alto, CA via craigslist.
I know that we featured another Kammback Vega the other day, but that was a special Yenko Stinger tribute with a Buick V6, but today’s example is a bone stock survivor. So, how do you like your Vega wagons, modified or stock? Find this 1974 Chevrolet Vega Wagon bidding for $7,177 in Woodland, CA via ebay with 1 day to go. Tip from Rock On!
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. The Yenko Stinger was a Corvair based custom built in the late 60s, but hold your pitchforks…Don Yenko also built a few hundred Yenko Stingers in the early 70s on the Vega chassis. This next car is offered as a “tribute” to the actual Stinger, but it has a 3.8 liter Buick V6 instead of the original turbo-4 2.3 liter that Yenko offered. Find this 1973 Chevrolet Vega GT Kammback bidding for $6,500 in Bakersfield, CA via ebay with 1 day to go.
This next car is an oddball. It isn’t sporty or fast, or cool, or sexy…but it is special. First you’ve got to admit that any wagon with rear facing seats is something special…and then you’ve got to honor the souls of all the muppets who were killed and skinned to cover those seats. And finally, this is a Hunsbloger approved Sable — the corporate cousin of the Ford Taurus that is both cheaper and more interesting than the Taurus bidding for a pittance with a few days to go. Find this 1992 Mercury Sable LS Wagon bidding for $2200 in Tucson, AZ with 3 days to go via carsandbids.com.
The Audi A3 was released into the US market in 2005 with the sporty Sportback 5-door model. They were hot, hot, hot when new — I had a friend who purchased one sight unseen from the dealer because he was so obsessed with the shape. He later returned the car to the dealer for a large restocking fee plus a new A4 because he hated the seats — he says they were as comfortable as a concrete park bench…I sat in the car, they felt like seats to me. The rest of the car was on-par with any of the best German cars from the era, and you hardly notices the front wheel drive platform. Anyway, even though it was just a Golf in Horch fur, the A3 was the hot hatch to get in the late 2000s, but they are cheap today. Find this 2009 Audi A3 Sportback offered for $6,500 in Mountain View, CA via craigslist.
This next car comes as a tip from Jim H who calls it an “honest ad” with “Hallmark card pricing.” Hallmark greeting cards might be expensive for greeting cards, but they are assuredly cheaper than the average Mercedes-Benz wagon, let’s take a closer look. Find this 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300TE Wagon offered for $1499 in Pittsfield, MA via craigslist.
