Something Fun: 2008 BMW 135i M Sport

As the 3-series bloated into mid-sized obscurity, BMW needed to introduce something fast, fun, light, and small. Enter the E82/87/88 generation BMW 1-series for the 2005 model year. It might share many of its suspension components with the 3-series, but it was lighter and arguably better at everything short of hauling a lot of stuff. Today’s 1-series has the desirable 3-liter N54 twin-turbo inline-6 and a manual transmission. Find this 2008 BMW 135i M Sport offered for $13,000 in Cottage Grove, MN via fakerash bookbook. Ha! Between the Vikes and the Gophers, things get a little boring around here in November/ December.
These are great little cars, especially with the manual. They’re pretty cheap to run too, lots of common & shared parts. The N52 is a bit thirsty, and save up a bit for the shredded serpentine belts, oil filter housing gaskets, oil pan gaskets, and rusted tone rings on the rear axles.
Had a 2011 135i n55 (single turbo, versus the n54 twin here) w/DCT. Pretty easy to pull an extra 100hp out of these with some bolt-on(s) and a software flash. Mine had a lot of the problem areas addressed, various gaskets, hp fuel pump, coil packs, injectors, etc. Fun car for the 2 years I owned it. After chasing increasing hp/weight ratios for the last 3 sporty cars I owned this convinced me to go back to the “slow car, fast” mantra.
