Poncho Batmobile: 1974 Pontiac Grand Am

General Motors introduced the Grand Am for the 1973 model year as a luxury headliner for their Pontiac brand to compete with fancified cars from Mercedes-Benz and others. The Grand Am offered serious performance credentials with either a 400 or 455 cubic inch V8, but it had more luxury features compared to a GTO or LeMans. Eventually the Grand Am marque became a watered down compact POS, but for a while it was sweet. Find this 1974 Pontiac Grand Am bidding for $12,800 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go, located in Redwood City, CA via eBay.

Seller Notes:
“1974 Pontiac Grand Am 2 dr. In the early 70s there was a big influx of foreign cars entering the American market and they offered both performance and luxury whereas in America you normally didn’t get both in 1 car. Pontiac went to work to create a car that would be able to go head-to-head with the foreigners. The Grand Prix was selected for its natural luxury features and the Trans Am for its performance enhancements. If you take the Grand Prix and Trans Am and put them together, there you have the Grand Am! If you didn’t know that I bet you aren’t alone. The Grand Am would leap frog through time with 5 generations spanning up until 2005. Here we have a ’74 model, 2nd year of the first generation. The BLACK ORIGINAL PAINT and RED INTERIOR look great! The RED LEATHER interior matches and is also in EXCELANT CONDITION . Under the hood is a 6.5L 400ci V8 backed by an automatic transmission. The car runs and drives out so smooth, shifts great and sounds good. 1 OWNER CALL ?? 6506700838”

Thanks, boss 😉
Gran Am is IMHO the best looking GM (pre?) malaise sled, but $45K buy it now? I bet.
BTW, tag on the trunk lid – 7.5 Litre or 6.6 Litre. I bet that blew some mid 70’s minds.
The T-tops kill the profile of this design.
What the heck is a “Poncho” Batmobile, Caped Crusader?
Is that a corded phone between the front seats? Pre-cell car phone? I thought the box was a CB ’till I saw the handset.
