Meatbox 8 of 12: 1990 Geo Metro

We continue our countdown of 12 econoboxes from this vintage Car and Driver comparison article. The twelve sub $10k (when new) cars were ranked by an assortment of college kids, and this next one is number 8. It is the dreaded Geo Metro, which aside from being the 2nd best platform for building a 24 Hrs of LeMons car, is the worst car ever produced in volume. Find this 1990 Geo Metro offered for $2900 in Lodi, CA via craigslist.

1990 Geo Metro for sale. First let me start by saying that no Geo Metro comes without problems. This vehicle is in good mechanical working order and will get you where you need to go at 50+ miles per gallon. That being said here’s the good and bad as I see it. 1 liter, 3 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission. Runs well, has new clutch, new passenger side hub/ spindle. The crankshaft and camshaft seals were replaced about a year ago so the engine does not leak any oil. I do believe, however, that the transmission may be slowly leaking, but I am not sure of this leak. May just need a new axle to stop this as I didn’t replace the axle when I replaced the clutch disc. First and second gear aren’t too happy, they both work but will only go into first at a complete stop and second puts up a fight, but will go and works best if just dropped into second without using the clutch pedal. Other than that, it is registered non-op, no back fees and by my rough guess has tires with approximately 80% tread left, less than 2 years old. Odometer shows around 50,000 miles but I’m not at all certain what the mileage is because it is a 5 digit odometer. It is in amazing cosmetic condition for the age of the vehicle, has all four original hub caps in great shape. Has a little paint fade and no major body damage, just a small scrape on the front driver side bumper. I only have the one picture of it, but contact me for any others and I will send them to you. Text or email only to Tyler, this phone ignores unknown phone calls. Price is negotiable and am open to most any offer.

My only Geo Metro experience was renting one in Kauai to see friends for the afternoon 20 miles away. How bad could one be?
Really bad. It was 30 years ago and memory fade erased whatever caused me to drive it approximately 200 feet and return it without leaving the lot. It surprised me because I once drove my niece’s Chevy Sprint over 100 miles with 4 people and it drove fine. Maybe the Metro’s automatic? Never again.
This one has what’s left of a manual which makes the pricing of a 30 year old 3 cyl shi(f)t box somewhere in dreamland.
