Maroon Two-Four: 1977 Porsche 924

Owning a Porsche 924 is less about blistering speed and more about joining a very specific fraternity of budget-conscious masochists who appreciate tidy handling, pop-up headlights, and the thrill of explaining that, yes, it is a real Porsche. Born from a collaboration between Porsche, Volkswagen, and Audi, the 924 debuted in 1976 as the brand’s first front-engine, water-cooled car—a radical departure from the rear-engined, air-cooled purism that came before it. Powered by a VW-sourced 2.0L four-cylinder and mated to a transaxle for near-perfect weight distribution, the 924 wasn’t fast, but it was balanced, efficient, and deceptively fun to drive. Today we’ve got one that needs some effort to get it “back to peak” but yowza that color!! Find this 1977 Porsche 924 offered for $2,500 in Ritzville, WA via craigslist. Tip from JCM.

BRING A TRAILER with a winch OR men enough to push the car up the trailer ramp. After purchasing, some twenty years ago, I parked it in the garage. As per the pictures, you can see it is in nice shape, both interior and exterior. Once I moved to Ritzville, I got it running again and parked it. It has been tarped, not getting any sun, since the move. Paint is just the same as in pixs. I don’t remember the miles, I’m guessing, know I’ve only added about 50.
I would like to see it go to a good home, someone who will appreciate and enjoy it. Please, as I’m old, tarping it is a big job for me. So, what you see in the pictures is exactly what you’ll get. It’ll take some effort to get it back to peak, but well worth it.
Thank you.

Hah, a two-four in Canada 🇨🇦 is slang for a case of 24 beer. Not sure if it’s the same in “The Land of The Free”.
And “shoe show” is slang for?
Wow. These were the exact exterior/interior colors of my 924. Mine had a slushbox. I bought it back in 1989 for $2500 from a used car salesman who was so broke his phone was disconnected.
I loved that car.
As I was picking up my last paycheck from a job I’d quit to form my own business, a coworker came up, all out of breath and said “Hey Stan, a truck just backed over the front of your car!”
I told him that wasn’t funny, especially since I was now unemployed.
He said “I’m serious! I couldn’t believe it. A Ryder rental truck. I ran outside and ran after it. I got the license plate as it drove away.”
The front metal between the 2 headlights was kinda crunched, but everything else was fine. I drove it home, wondering how in the heck I was going to pay to fix it with no money.
I contacted Ryder for the insurance claim, never expecting anything since it was a hit and run. They were overjoyed to find their truck– which had been stolen a week earlier in Maine. They had no idea where it was! (this was before rental companies put Lojacks on their cars and trucks).
Ryder sent me a check for $1850.
That money helped get me through my first 6 very lean months of running my first business.
I will be forever grateful to those truck thieves for backing into my car.
I bought a black vinyl bra for it (they were very popular back then, especially for the Porsches because the front end paint chipped easily from rocks kicked up when you were driving behind a semi). With that bra on you couldn’t even tell the nose was a bit crushed.
I’d been able to buy the car cheaply because the front right fender had a long ugly scrape/dent. It wasn’t very noticable, but no self-respecing Porschephile would drive something that looked like that.
I was neither (self respecting, or a Porschephile). 😜
I eventually bought an aftermarket steel replacement fender and had the car repainted white at Earl Scheib for about $350. Back then, I was too young to appreciate how cool the maroon was.
A few years later I sold it to a friend who drove it through a really bad sandstorm where the cheap repaint came off in spots.
He drove that red/white blotchy car around for years. Called it “The Pinto”.
He also had no self respect! Bwahahaha.
Even in the late 80s the back carpeting was bleached exactly like the photos of this one.
Hard to believe that was over 35 years ago!
-Stan (…who very much appreciated this walk down memory lane…)
I forgot to mention: My 924 never had a tow ball and hitch on the back. I wonder what the heck these guys towed with it?!?
…maybe I don’t wanna know…
The 914/6 and the 944 turbo I inherited both had trailer hitches.
My uncle had a little trailer big enough to carry a set of special wheels and tires to autocrosses. He would take street tires to the local Bandag retread place and have them retreaded with special rubber about as hard as cake frosting and mount them on 9-pound Mahle gasburner wheels.
