Inline-6 and 5-Speed: 1996 Ford F-150 4X4

There are times when a truck just needs to be a truck. You don’t need full self-driving, or partial self-driving, Apple Play, or a $100k price tag. You need it to start, haul junk to a destination, and return empty. Or with more junk. It is a simple task that requires simple mechanical parts like a manual transmission and a big 4.9 liter naturally aspirated inline-6 mated to all four wheels via a manually selectable transfer case. Find this 1996 Ford F-150 4X4 bidding for $3,550 in Ballston Spa, NY via ebay motors.

From the seller:

About this vehicle
Up for auction with no reserve is a largely original 1996 Ford F-150 XLT 4×4 with 4.9L (300 ci) inline 6 paired with 5 speed manual transmission. It’s an honest “OBS” truck in great condition. It is equally at home on the farm, making weekend dump runs, or getting ice cream cones on a Sunday afternoon.

Vehicle Details
This 1996 Ford F-150 XLT is a regular-cab short bed 4×4 pickup that was initially sold in Connecticut and spent time in Vermont and New York before my acquisition in 2021. The truck is powered by a 300ci inline six paired with a five-speed manual transmission and is finished in Pacific Green over Opal Gray cloth. Equipment includes original 15″ alloy wheels, chrome bumpers, a sliding rear window, air conditioning, cruise control, and original cassette stereo. This F-150 is offered with a clean Carfax report, and a clean New York title in the seller’s name.

I purchased the truck with about 155,750 miles, authenticated by a NYS safety inspection performed at 155,779. In January 2022 I had a new instrument panel installed with an integral digital odometer. The new odometer indicated about 220k miles. The mileage presented on the odometer is wrong, and high by about 65,000 miles. Actual mileage on the truck today is approximately 158,000 miles and is supported by the mileage progression in the CarFax. About 3,000 miles have been added under my ownership. Nevertheless I am presenting the truck for sale with its displayed mileage of about 223k miles.

The most recent oil change was performed in January 2024. Brake fluid and coolant were changed in 2023. There is an intermittent PO174 code (OBD2) indicating (Bank 2 Fuel System Too Lean). No adverse conditions are noted during driving.

Close-up photos show rust spots on the front bumper and both rear wheel wells, dings in the tailgate, patina on the original chrome mirrors, and blemishes on the side moldings.

Factory 15″ ten-hole alloy wheels are mounted with nearly new 31X10.50R15LT M+S tires with great tread life remaining. A full-size spare tire and wheel is shown in the underbody.

The bench seat is upholstered in Opal Gray cloth and is complemented by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Appointments include power-adjustable lumbar support, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and locks, all-weather floor mats over carpet in good condition, and a AM/FM cassette stereo. Damage to the driver side map pocket and glove box closure is noted.

The steering wheel with Ford-branded aftermarket cover frames an 85-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and supplementary gauges for oil pressure, voltage, coolant temperature, and fuel level. All controls and accessories function as intended.
