Infused Troféo Oil: 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado Troféo
The Oldsmobile brand was put to pasture after the 2004 model year, but the writing was on the wall when the personal luxury coupe Toronado was canceled in 1992. It wasn’t a huge surprise because the Toronado had been downsized from a V8 body-on-frame beast to a V6 unibody thing in 1986…but the Troféo version of the Toronado was unusually cool — it had funky hidden headlights, a sporty FE3 suspension, faux dual-exhaust, and a badass shifter that looks like a massive high voltage mechanical breaker switch that you’d use to light up a Christmas tree in Times Square or electrocute a condemned criminal…if you were into that kinda thing. This is a 29 year owned, second owner car. It’s always been garaged and well cared for. It’s loaded with power options that all work, including 12 way adjustable seats with back and side lumbar controls. It has a power moon roof, soft close trunk, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning and power locks. The tires are fairly new and have good tread depth. No leaks, very clean under carriage. Known problems are a scuff in the passenger side front bumper, cracked driver’s side armrest (currently covered w/ red tape). The passenger side driving light bulb is burnt out and the stereo sounds fine for a few miles, but then degrades to annoying static over the music. Also, the upgraded wheels are missing their center caps.
The car has been parked for two years but prior to that it had new brakes, new battery plus new fluids and oil change. Everything seems to be in good running order after pulling it out of storage, detailing it and test driving it.

This exact car but with blue leather was my mom’s last cool car. She was 80 and her ‘78 Seville was costing about $500 a month to keep running. Until that car they always had Cadillac convertibles and now we were trying to steer her towards a sensible car fitting her age. She wasn’t having it. One day “I found my car!” And this was it. She drove it 70 miles one way to get her hair done monthly and was always ready to drive anywhere.
Eventually the big door was too much for her and at 87 bought a Nissan Sentra. That car was so easy to drive and park she never looked back. My sister bought the Trofeo and, as predicted, the trans went out at 100,000 miles.
Still on my 12y/o self’s list of “cool cars”. I thought that maybe there was a Quad 4 version of this but I guess my memory needs glasses as bad as my eyes do.
