High Chi Rock Queue: 1984 Toyota Corolla SR5

The AE86 generation Toyota Corolla built from 1983 to 1987 was the last truly great economy car to come from the biggest auto maker in the world. No one will ever buy a Prius years from now for its driving experience, but the 30 year old Corolla is a different animal at its core. The front-engine rear-drive setup is perfect in the lightweight chassis and although this one doesn’t have the fuel injected twin-cam motor from the GT-S, it does have a manual transmission and the asking price isn’t insane. Find this 1984 Toyota Corolla SR5 offered for $7,500 in Brandon, FL. Tip from David in Tampa.

It’s a Supra that shrunk in the dryer. A friend of mine when not running his izakaya in Odawara raced these both on the Fuji Speedway was well as on the circuitous roads in the Hakone region.
Having ridden as a terrified passenger with him I’m here to say it’s a very capable sports car in its own right.
