Hatchback Dreamin: 1988 Toyota Corolla FX16

The 1987-1988 Toyota Corolla FX16 was Toyota’s late 1980s answer to the GTI, a lightweight front wheel drive hatch built at the NUMMI plant in California and powered by the high revving 1.6 liter 4A GE twin cam engine. With 108 horsepower, a 5 speed manual, four wheel disc brakes, and available GTS trim with sport seats and upgraded suspension, the FX16 delivered genuine hot hatch credentials at a time when most economy cars were still focused purely on efficiency. It was short-lived, relatively low production, and has since become one of the more overlooked performance Toyotas of the era. Today we’ve got a super cheap example that needs non-white stripe tires and de-scuzzification. Find this 1988 Toyota Corolla FX16 offered for $999 in Macon, GA via craigslist. Tip from Spencercat
