Green Thug Life: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300TD W123

The Mercedes-Benz W123 300TD wagon is one of those solidly built classics that is powered by an engine fit for pulling a plow. At least today’s plow puller is boosted with a small turbocharger and should be good for 121 horsepower and 170 ft-lbs of torque. This car is good enough that I recommended one to a friend today. This friend, let’s call him DWood for the sake of anonymity, asked me if I would recommend that he purchase a 2015 Mercedes E350 wagon, to which I said…no, emphatically not. Buy the nicest W123 or W124 you can find and enjoy the vintage Benz experience. Find this 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300TD offered for $9,800 in Anaheim, CA via craigslist.

Extremely rare Green/Parchment 1984 Mercedes 300TD diesel station wagon. Originally petrol green, now painted forest green. 288,000 original miles in excellent mechanical condition. The transmission shifts perfectly with a recent service. In the last two months, the engine and A/C have been serviced, brand new radiator installed and fluid flush, freshly rebuilt rear hydraulic shocks, brand new carpet throughout, brand new coco mats added, rare accessory roof rack cross bars sourced. It’s a very nice driver that shows well. The front rubber door seals need to be replaced as they are worn out. Readily available through the Mercedes Benz Classic center. An excellent driving car in one of the most desirable color combos.

With my new-found grey hair I’d in ‘In Like Flint.’
If you have an interest in engineering find one of these in a junk yard and just pull a few things apart. There is an attention to detail and serviceability that is mindblowing. Not everything is simple, but it all has purpose and thought invested in it.
