F1 Inspired: 2006 BMW M5

The E60 generation M5 introduced the world to BMW’s first (and only) production V10 powerplant, inspired by the V10 engine used in the BMW Sauber Formula 1 car. The production engine shared nothing in common with the racing machine, (other than cylinder count) but that didn’t stop BMW from selling it as a racing inspired beast complete with quick shifting fancy-pants SMG 7-speed gearbox that was shifted via an electro-hydraulic system. They were expensive when new, but the magic depreciation fairy shook her wand at this thing and now they are cheap. Find this 2006 BMW M5 offered for $17,990 CAD ($13,998 USD) via kijiji.net. See a better way to drive a fast M5? tips@dailyturismo.com
A sorta-friend owned one from new. He has deep pockets and an insecurity complex somewhat allayed by owning $100k+ cars. He wiped out his M5 at speeds measured as a % of mach leaving the car a mangled pile of garbage – and himself only fairing slightly better. He realized while convalescing in the hospital that since he was already resigned to months of healing, why not make some tweaks on his own body?
Many months later he visited a restaurant he owns and nobody recognized him. He’d gotten a strong chin, a bold new nose and reversed his receding hairline almost back to his eyebrows. Below the facial alterations, the steroids and visits to the gym with a personal trainer had replaced what looked like the early signs of a pregnancy with a six pack.
There’s no moral to this anecdote, other than to say when I see an M5 of this era I think of an insecure guy injecting steroids and making rich plastic surgeons richer.
Writeup implies no stick option. If so, to a $100k V10 M5 for pennies on the dollar, I will say “meh”.
Close but no wagon.
F1 inspired, in what way… needing a team of engineers to keep it running?
