EZ Project: 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 Aerocoupe

Buckle up those automatic seatbelts folks, because we’re about to take a ride in the time machine to the era of mullets, neon leg warmers, and cassette tapes – all with a dash of Pontiac marketing buzzword swagger! Aerocoupe. This “aerodynamic marvel” was as close as the ’80s got to a stealth bomber with a trunk, and we’re here to dissect its quirks, curves, and possibly question a few of its life choices. The seller of today’s 2+2 (technically a sub model of the Pontiac Grand Prix) describes it as “good condition” to which I would ask what would a “bad condition” Aerocoupe look like? Find this 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 Aerocoupe offered for $8,300 in Momence, IL via facebook.

Officially, the “Aerocoupe” name was only used for the Monte Carlo SS with the sloped rear window, which had hot-wire folds at the sides. The Grand Prix version, with the smoother (and even more sloped) bubble-style rear window seen here, only used the “2+2” name — an odd misnomer, as these had adult-sized rear seats just like any other GM coupe on the G-Special platform.
As for why GM never bothered to engineer the MC SS Aerocoupe or GP 2+2 to work as proper hatchbacks, nor equip either of them with a high-performance engine, all that was entirely besides the point. Their sole reason for these existing at all was to homologate the more aerodynamic profile for NASCAR, so GM wasn’t gonna build even one more car than needed for that, nor invest a penny more than needed to get them built and sold — and they knew they’d sell every single one of them at full price regardless, being a limited-production edition associated with NASCAR.
