Class of One: 1988 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL W126

The W126 generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class was the longest-running (12 years, from 1979 through 1991) and most successful selling (890K examples sold) of all Daimler’s flagship sedan series. Styling came from Bruno Sacco (if you don’t know Sacco planks, you should read this article) and mechanical parts came from a time when Mercedes-Benz was producing Battleship Bismark quality cars while everyone else was building dinghies. Drive this car for a few months and then try driving ANYTHING ELSE from 1988: Lincoln, Cadillac, Lexus, Audi…not even close; maybe a 7-series BMW is comparable. Find this 1988 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL W126 offered for $10,999 in Orlando, FL via ebay classifieds.

Outside, yes. Inside, no.
You can even take the ad copy as a metaphor for the inside as the beginning and the outside as the second half.
It’s sort of like a Brioni suit with a silk lining depicting a Japanese bordello.
Or maybe donuts.

Damn Hugh, now I want a double breasted suit with 16th century Japanese porn as the lining.
This is pretty nice.
Sweet spot on these old W129 S class cars is 1990 & 1991 which got leather wrapped steering wheels, and the seats were much better than the older cars.
They redesigned the seat springs or some such and as a result were much more supportive and felt less like you were sitting on a piece of plywood and trying to balance on a single bedspring.
Also twin airbags, maybe?
