Cinquecento Veloce: 1971 Fiat 500 Abarth

It is hard to understand how small a vintage Fiat 500 (Cinquecento!) is unless you see one in person. They are 116.9 inches in length, which is 3 inches shorter than the wheelbase of a Stellantis Chrysler 300 sedan. Haha, Stellantis. Anyway, at 1100 lbs curb weight, the vintage Fiat 500 is a zippy little city car, but if you want something fun with an Abarth badge, this is the way to do it. Find this 1971 Fiat 500 Abarth offered for $18,900 in Miami, FL via ebay.

Abarth & C. S.p.A. (pronounced [ˈabart]) is an Italian racing car and road car maker founded by Italo-Austrian Carlo Abarth in 1949.[3] Its logo is a shield with a stylized scorpion on a yellow and red background. Abarth started by producing high performance parts and selling accessories mainly for Fiat in its early days. Back then they were known for their sportscar team and hill climb races.Â
This 1971 Fiat 500 was custom built in Italy using Abarth parts and made into what it is today. “sunroof delete (removable)”
Huh?
Do I recall correctly that the original sunroof on one of these was a fold-up canvas sheet? Couldn’t have been very water- or wind-proof, so they stuck down this plastic cap. Pop it off with a bottle opener?
“The Interior is splendid and contrast well to the exterior paint, red Italian upholstery has been fitted, and tastefully done” Looking at this build ‘tastefully done’ in the ad anywhere seems like an extremely questionable judgement call.
Not a fan of the wheels and some other aspects of the body kit like the hood scoop. That hood scoop makes no sense, engine is in the back. Wish these were cheaper would be crazy fun to drive. A long while back I saw a show that featured them. They said it was the F1 driver’s car of choice and listed off a number of drivers like Sebastian Vittel who had them.
I was thinking that these cars don’t look right on 17″ wheels. They I realized they’re probably 14″. Still don’t look right.
