Red, White & Black: 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL

I’m not a huge fan of bucket seats on a big American muscle cruiser — I think they should have vinyl bench seats and column mounted shifters…but the center console on this next car is amazing. Like a drunkards’ nose, it is huge, red and prominent. The shifter sticks out of it like an alien monolith and it just makes me happy. Nice. Seats from George Jetson’s bubble car, although with no headrests you might want a Gazoo helmet.
I’m trying to come up with a principled basis for why I’d be totally fine with an automatic in a car like this. Maybe it’s that the driving experience is mainly about just being in the thing while gliding along. Parades and family cruising, as the seller said.
Love the car (other than the AT), but that ebay seller with no feedback gives me serious pause. Also, I thought the 390 had a separate small radiator filler tank. Makes me wonder if it’s a 352 instead.
Not to be that guy, but the presentation on this leaves something to be desired. Vacuum the carpeting and if there is good carpet under the mats, take the damn mats out. If the carpeting is shot clean the damn mats. We can’t smell the car in the photos, so lose the little yellow tree, and the rearview mirror is on the floor of the back seat. Why? It also has some miscellaneous trash to keep it company. It’s not a good look.
Also, if you have a pillarless hardtop, take at least one photo with all four windows lowered to remind people why pillarless hardtops are cool in spite of having the structural integrity of a pool noodle and doors that can be unlocked by anyone with a coathanger.
Those are cool looking seats but remind me that my neck has been hurting for 30 years after getting rear ended in my 63 two-door Galaxie.
