Cheaper By The Dozing: 1987 Toyota Corolla FX16

On the Toyota website, the soggy vanilla wafer favored Corolla is given the tag line “Uncover fun” — a subtle acknowledgement that it would take a David Blaine level magician to put fun in a Corolla. The depicted urban youngsters getting coffee, hitting up gourmet food trucks, or fluffing their hair aren’t old enough to remember that the Corolla wasn’t always mood killing penalty box with all the joie de vivre of French silent film about dead puppies. It was once a fun little corner carver that perked up an enthusiast’s head with names like AE86 Levin, Sprinter Trueno, or the FX-16 hatchback version. Today’s version is scruffy and needs some love…but it is cheap. Find this 1987 Toyota Corolla FX16 bidding for $510 in Martinez, CA via eBay with one day to go.

From the seller:
1987 FX16 GTS with a later model engine swap. Currently does not run as there seems to be an electrical issue. With a battery installed NO electrics come on in the car. The exhaust CAT (missing) was removed but retains the rear muffler and header. The rear seat and rear interior plastic panels have been removed and are missing. Front seats have no rips. Carpet is there-not too bad. Over all it’s a solid car, no structural rust, only a few dents as shown. All glass but the front is crack-free.
According to the Autocheck report, this is a previous two owner car and verified miles on chassis with no reports of accidents or other issues.
Miles on the cluster show 247K. I have no date or miles on the engine swap performed.
Optioned with:

FX16 GTS side skirts & rear wing & additional chassis bracing.
4 wheel disc brakes
Power mirrors
Ground Control coilovers in rear-do not know the inserts
Magna Flow rear stainless muffler
13″ Italian made and JDM licensed FPS alloy turbine wheels. Have ALL 4 rims. The one shown is a 14″ race slick rim/tire combo
The rest is per the pictures.
Likely there are a number of other things, which I am not aware of as I do not really know these cars. Nor have I investigated this particular car in length. I rescued it days before the owner was going to scrap it. I remember these cars when new and always liked them. I just had to save it so someone could keep another FX alive.
At the very least, this is a great parts car. Perhaps it’s that low cost 20 valve engine you need for your build. Maybe figure out the electrics and have a cheap go cart racer.

Loved that ad.
Just a roll cage and a few electrical exorcisms away from Lemons glory!
Oh and this should be an FX-20 now; that’s a 20-valve “silver top” 4A-GE swapped in there. 5 valves per cylinder and VVT. 160hp would be a hoot in this car. Lemons racing number on the doors & hood needs to be 20, not 16 😉
I had a plain FX manual for a couple of years. Replaced a horn and distributor cap, and sold it for $200 more than I paid for it. Great little car for me in my late 20s….
