Cheap Dirt: 1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS 4X4

First-gen Monteros have a legit off-road reputation. These were not soft crossovers; they were ladder-frame, low-range 4WD SUVs from the era when Mitsubishi was still deep into rally and Dakar madness. Monteros can be expensive, but this car is offered for next to nothing because the headgasket is blown, and with 295K miles, you might find a few other things wrong. But for the right DIY mechanic with a penchant for risky decisions, this could be fun. Find this 1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS 4X4 offered for $1000 in Carthage, NC via Craigslist. Tip from Spencercat.

I’m selling my 1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS because it blew a head gasket and I am not a mechanic. If you can do the work or have a friend that’s a mechanic, this is a good price on this tough vehicle. Before the head gasket blew, there were no issues with the strong V6 SUV, the A/C works, new Bluetooth radio and front speakers, 5 speed manual, tires are in very good shape, 4 x 4 works great, LS model has power windows, power door locks, cruise control, rear wiper & defrost, front and rear Reese hitch. It was used for a tow car behind a motorhome for years before I got it, so the mileage is high. I love this tough old SUV and hate to sell it, because it was my daily driver.
