Barris Style: 1963 Ford Thunderbird

What you’re looking at is a third generation (1961-1963) Ford Thunderbird that decided factory flair wasn’t nearly outrageous enough, so sometime in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s it got the full George Barris–inspired makeover treatment. Gone are the elegant lines of the “Bullet Bird,” replaced with a long snout, tunneled headlights, a honeycomb grille, and a rear light bar that looks ready for a low-budget sci-fi flick. The interior? Silver pleats with tufted red inserts that scream more Vegas lounge than Dearborn design studio. Underneath it’s still very much a T-Bird—stored indoors, no rust, automatic V8 cruiser—but as a project it’s pure time capsule custom, the kind of oddball survivor you almost never see outside of vintage magazines or dusty garages. That is one fugly creation.
Does it come with the tools on the floor? Also that interior feels like the driver should be a straight jacket, so much padding everywhere!!!!
Did this George Barris Wannabee take inspiration from drug store donut rings or otherwise suffer from Hemorrhoids? those seats look like they could help address that PITA condition.
And Yeah, gray padding everywhere screams for Napoleon XIV’S “They’re Coming To Take Me Away Ha-Haaa” looping on the sound system.
I saw the first pic and I’m like, OK, this might be cool. Then I saw the grille. Then I saw the interior and I began to feel like someone was f%%%%%G with me…
More of a Ed Roth style than George Barris.
