5-Speed Wagon: 1998 Volvo V70

If I know anything about you guys, it is that y’all comment on the things you love. So that means you loved the cheap Oldsmobile Alero with the tragic rear end damage, so I think this next car will fit right into the DT paradigm of cheap and basic daily driver. As a plus this thing has some wagon style and a manual gearbox. Win, win, win. Find this 1998 Volvo V70 offered for $2500 in Santa Cruz, CA via craigslist.

Just what I want, it’s a couple of hours away, the price is great, the color is great, and I’m on my way to the airport to go to Brooklyn.
Sigh
No rear end damage and 3/4 view..I’m out.
Those tail lights….. yum yum.
I have had this exact year and model and color in both auto and manual. A most excellent car either way. Manual was obviously great, except when it came time to replace the clutch. Took like four days. Two options, either the engine needs to come out, or the subframe needs to be dropped. I chose the subframe and in hindsight probably should have gone engine out.
Love the dash on these.
Twist the knife will you?
Still miss my manual 740 turbo wagon that was perfect except for the haunted abs.
Should have just had it disabled.
I suspect the previous owner had tightened up the waste gate in the turbo just a bit. It made launches from those nyc on-ramps with a stop sign and a cop at the end actually fun. “Just merging with traffic and trying to not cause anyone to have to brake unexpectedly officer. Safety first! “
This is a great blend of affordable, interesting, and fun, but how did it end up pinned to the top of the posts for several days?
Vince, this post seems to be set as “sticky†in WordPress, not because of the happy to see you manual transmission interface but because WordPress uses that to stick a post to the top of the list indefinitely. I think there is a button in the admin interface marked sticky that controls it.
Yup. Was sticky. Didn’t notice till you pointed it out.
I could set up embedded images and maybe editing in the comments sometime btw if you want.
Hey guys … seriously … is nobody looking at the odometer? It’s literally driven further than the distance to the moon. If this was a legendary 300d then sure I get it.
Was this generation of Volvo really that bullet proof?
The 740 and 960 wagons are the sweet spot in my opinion.
The 740 turbo is about as simple as can be. My mechanic swears that the 960 is peak Volvo.
In that case, I’ll add them to my list of desirable despite high mileage autos. Volvos are my automotive blindspot.
