5-Speed Hatchback: 1988 Saab 900 Turbo
The OG Saab 900 classic platform (1978-1994) was a mild upgrade on the older Saab 99 platform. This means you still get an engine mounted backwards AND at a jaunty 45 degree angle mated to the front tires, but the 900 was faster and more refined than the old 99. From a roll, a vintage Saab 900 turbo will hang with all of the best sports cars from the era in a straight line and the double wishbone suspension means it will also take the turns better than most of the junk on the road. Rust is minimal, and non structural. Comes with a plethora of spare parts and body panels.

No mention of what makes it a running project or why you wouldn’t want to drive it home??
The offhand mention of someone putting down a $500 deposit and being so disappointed in the car that they walked away from it and he kept the $500 seems like the opening of a Stephen King story. Who knows what would happen to you if you were to drive it home. Something involving the restless spirits of a few hundred dead Vikings trapped behind that dashboard no doubt.
That and the fact that there is some level of acceptable deferred repair on this car where obviously a 2×4 holding up the hood doesn’t make the to-do list but a list of flaws is not enumerated.
The way a 900 tracks down the highway is sublime. And it’s snow capabilities are excellent too. The front-rear balance is really interesting. Jacking up the front from right behind the front tire will lift the whole side.
