Z10 RPO: 1974 Chevrolet Vega Spirit of America

There are some interesting parallels between the early 1970s and the early 2020s when it comes to cars and the car economy. Let’s start with government regulations that were making cars more safe for everyone and better for the environment, but demonstrably less fun to drive…yeah that happened in the 70s with seats belts and crash standards, fuel economy and emissions requirements, it continues today with more ever stringent fuel economy standards and ever increasing safety gizmos like automatic brake check and blind spot buzzers. There was also a crazy fuel crisis in 1973 and out of control inflation in the following years, so manufacturers released silly special editions of their cars to get people to head into the dealerships. In 1974 it was the “Spirit of America” and it makes you wonder what kind of crazy stuff the OE’s will try and pull to get people to buy their crap in 2023 and beyond. Find this 1974 Chevrolet Vega Spirit of America offered for $9000 in Salinas, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Offering for sale. 1974 Chevrolet Vega Spirit of America special edition. This is a legitimate Z10 RPO Spirit of America. This is an extremely rare special edition to begin with and this one is even more rare as it is a GT model. I have only been able to research and find two other GT model SoA’s. It is also a 4 speed manual transmission.
This car is an original Reno NV car and still wears the emblem from the selling dealer.
This car has had a 1975 Cosworth Vega engine and transmission installed along with the original electronic fuel injection.

The car has new front and rear brakes but needs a master cylinder replacement.
The interior is in fair to poor condition and needs restoration. I have a new complete carpet kit that comes with the car still in the boxes.
The car runs great.
The car is currently registered and is smog exempt.
The body has some rust n the lower front cowl areas and the battery tray area.
The floors are very solid as is the spare tire well.
