Wood Track: 2015 BMW 320i xDrive

This next car comes from tipper Carter who writes: Maybe DT can have a contest for CL ads where there is something seemingly obvious in the ad that is completely unexplained. And, while this car isn’t as extreme as a Mustang on stoves, or an E30 3-series on logs, it is arguably more perplexing. Those other cars needed the scrap material as impromptu wheels/jacks/jack-stands, but this car is inexplicably sitting on 4 pieces of newish plywood. Afraid of getting the wheels wet? Trying to stay ungrounded? The tires have a bias for ply? Painting the driveway? Find this 2015 BMW 320i xDrive F30 offered for $16,000 in Auburn, ME via craigslist.

Probably the world’s most conscientious detail guy. Didn’t want a giant tire shine oil slick on the asphalt when it dried.
That crossed my mind as well because when I add a little tire shine on my tires, the pad I use tags the concrete and leaves a black mark on my light-ish gray driveway…. but this guy’s driveway is asphalt…. so I got a wild hair and emailed the guy, asking him the dealio about the plywood. He said he just had it done and the asphalt was fresh, ergo, they recommended he place the wood there to minimize any indentations. Makes sense now.
I knew a guy who had to do this plywood trick under the kickstand of his motorcycle. On really hot days the asphalt would soften and the small foot of the stand would want to sink into the ground (deeper than the tires would) and eventually topple the bike. It fell over one time and he resorted to plywood after that. I think there are some types of asphalt that are softer than others.
Had that happen to my 1100 Yamaha at work not fun put a hole in the gas tank !
Ha. When I sent in this to DT, that was one of my absurd guesses. ‘Don’t want to dent the driveway’.

Reminds me of a story about a endurance racing team that decided that a nice clean sheet of plywood would be an improvement over the dirty pit surface. It worked fine until the driver came in a little hot and the car was still under heavy breaking when the front wheels rolled onto the plywood.
Fortunately no one was killed so it became a funny story.
That’s a great price for a very nice car. Puzzling.
