Wheeler Dealer Approved: 1982 Toyota Supra

I watched an episode of Wheeler Dealers the other night where the subject flip car was a bronze colored Supra just like this one. Some pointy haired Brit named Ant had replaced the unflappable Edd China, but the unseen extras did a great job replacing the exhaust and head gasket while the Ant and Mike B raved about how nice the car looked at the end…and it did indeed look nice. How much time and money would it take to make this one as nice…I’m not sure, but it would be fun. Find this 1982 Toyota Supra bidding for $3050 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go, located in Roxbury, CT.

From the seller:
Original stock 1982 Toyota Supra , Terra Cotta Red with Black trim. It has 195,076 miles on it. Starts right up, runs/ drives strong and shifts smoothly. The only rust is shown in the photos (lower section of hatchback , in painted black section adjacent to glass), Engine compartment is in good shape as well as the body. The black molding around headlights is partially/mostly missing (see photo’s). There is a silver dollar size paint chip on the top of the Supra, as well as smaller chips elsewhere on the red exterior and Black section of hatchback. These are all small chips. I have not registered this Supra. It has been in clean/dry storage for 2 years. I have driven the Supra on some short drives (less than 40 miles). The air conditioner sounds like it is operating, however, the air is cool/not cold. Perhaps a recharge is needed. The plastic trim on the interior of hatchback/trunk space is cracked/broken/dryed out. Please look carefully at the pictures. I have pictures showing cosmetic issues, with exterior paint, 1 rust spot, interior area of Supra (ie broken glove box latch, roof paint chip,1 rust spot, faded trunk carpet and other interior trim areas which has faded over 38 years. This was a California Supra (purchased from Western Classics in Northern Ca). The Supra is sold in “as is condition, without a warranty.” You are welcome to(or have your agent) view the Supra in person by contacting me via the Ebay message board. I had purchased this Supra because in 1982 I had the exact color/style Supra which I used for business travel. I enjoyed the Supra then, it never failed on me. Since the purchase of this Supra 2 years ago , I decided to concentrate on restoring my classic British 1960/70’s sports cars .

Pointy-haired is totally a British thing, and I do not get it.
What name is shortened to get “Edd”?
Why isn’t there a show where you can just to watch Edd C. fix cars, without the annoying “dealer”-ing bits?
When I was in college, I remember having a conversation with a friend who was trying to decide which pickup truck to buy. He wanted something that was good to take fishing. I asked him what percentage of his time driving was spent to and from fishing holes. It was not a large percentage. I suggested getting a car he liked to drive most of the time, if he could find one that also had an enclosed rear cargo section large enough to hold a fishing rod, tackle box, and a bucket, that is, any car with a trunk. This would have been 1983, and he got a brown Supra. He loved it and thanked me excessively for suggesting it every time I saw him. It could be this actual one.
The disdain for Ant and implication that he’s not doing the wrenching is a little odd since that dude is a very accomplished and respected builder in his own right, probably more significantly so than Edd?
Brad,
I meant no disrespect for Ant — he is a very accomplished and handsome dude. Ant (according to wikipedia) was a full time British Constable (with the custodian hat and all) thru 2005 when he quit to pursue his car building dreams and play semi-pro foot…errr..soccer. But here’s the thing; If you remember 2017 when Edd quit the show http://dailyturismo.com/edd-china-hero-we-dont-deserve/, it wasn’t so he could pursue his dream of being a male model, it was because Velocity wanted to dumb down the workshop portion of the show and cut corners; Edd’s words: “this new direction is not something I am comfortable with as I feel the corners I was being asked to cut compromised the quality of my work and would erode my integrity as well as that of the show.”
So, off Edd went and in came somebody named Ant who didn’t wear a long sleeve shirt under a short sleeve shirt but seemed to play the part of the mechanic quite well. He speaks the language and clearly knows his car parts…but in the Supra episode there is a part when he rebuilds the exhaust system. He shows this fancy new tube bending machine, smiles at the camera and presto the new exhaust pipe is welded, welds ground, and ready for install. Do you expect me to believe that Mr Ant did all of the bending, welding, grinding, and polishing to make that new exhaust pipe a perfect fit? Maybe…or maybe a team of greasy fingered mechanics whipped up the pipe while Ant fixed his hair and checked his Instagram feed. Edd had the grease stains to prove that he had done most of the work (and he admitted when he needed a helper), but most of Ants work is a quick smile-grind-cut-cut-smile montage where he isn’t sweaty or disheveled at the end of the episode? Maybe, I’m wrong? Maybe I need to watch more episodes since I’ve only seen a handful of the current series.
Where the old wheeler dealers would have Edd explaining why a CAT 3406E needs to have Permatex Aviation Sealant #3 spread liberally along the oil drain holes before installing the spacer plate gasket, the new show would maybe have a quick cut of the head being torqued down and a freshly painted valve cover. It isn’t Ant’s fault because he is an actor (and a good one at that!), but I just feel that Edd China took WD to the point where the show went mainstream and the show sold out a bit…a lot…in order to make more money and appeal to a wider audience. That is not a bad thing, that is just a thing. So, my apologies to Ant if he is indeed offended by my slight, and I’m sorry if he cries himself to bed tonight in his beach view mansion on 600 thread count sheets next to his hot house flipping wife and his garage full of classics. :).
And Brad, next time I will try to remember that my mother told me to always be nice!!

Spot on. I liked that Edd shows that with some effort and get after it the regular guy can turn a wrench and polish up a forgotten gem. New guy, great actor and sure build chops or whatever…but they don’t show the details as close and he never seems to get dirty or sweaty.
