What Am I? Underneath
Welcome back to our Monday morning game of cat or mouse — which is known as What Am I? Today, you get to take a look at this picture and figure out the subject vehicle.

Sheesh….No love for my success last week! I need Internet validation!
FTB — you are a star!! And that was a good job identifying that thing last week because it was OBSCURE!!
No fargin' idea, but thinking it isn't British due to the lack of oil coating from leaks.
I think we are looking at something small and rear-engined with a very basic front suspension and riveted replacement floor plan in the front. Like a Subaru 360??
How common is it to have a giant-ass gear wheel just chillin' in the open air under a vehicle? I feel like that might not be real safe assuming it rotates when the car is under way.
Its definitely a small, old rear engine, rear drive car. Tires are tall and skinny and theres no transmission linkage sticking below the pan so that eliminates all the easy ones that come to mind. Gonna have to start looking at automobila obscura like a small and French, or NSU?
Something with a removable bell housing inspection plate (or even half the housing) that is missing in this picture.
NSU-Prinz. Although I missed the ring gear on the flywheel – I thought for a moment it was one of those cheap accordian hoses for coolant…
saab 96 or sonnet? (maybe I'm missing another V4 FWD saab)
never used blogger before…I'm the unknown!
Alex — not a Saab, but good job figuring out how to get blogger to work…that tends to be an issue nowadays.

Is that a transverse leaf on the suspension opposite from which the photograph is taken? Or is that steering gear?
I reckon this is a Fiat 500 or 126.
To my eye that looks like a transverse leaf spring up front!!
You can also just see the 3"(?) tube on the RH side that blows hot air into the cabin from the engine bay.
Agreed – Fiat 500 or Fiat 600/Multipla?

Not the same car, but sportscarshop.com/1959-fiat-multipla/
You guys are VERY close with the Fiat 500. So close that I'm ALMOST going to give it to ya…but I'm curious to see if someone can find the exact make/model.
I like wicker as much as the next person – 'zzit a 500 Jolly Ghia?
Pfft, it's obviously a 1959 Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile Convertible Coupe.

I would like to credit FTB for the inspiration to push harder and try to win this game in his honor.
In all seriousness, I was checking last week's "what am I" several times a day just to see who would win, and after FTB posted his winning response, I was checking it daily just to see DT's confirmation, only to find a dead, abandoned thread. It's not the first time a winning answer in "what am I" has been ignored. C'mon DT! We simpletons try so hard at this game, and ask for so little!
I'da musta murdered Autobianchi when I went a searching on the ebay…
Dr D — You've done good. And I take FULL blame and responsibility for the What Am I? being left to rot on the vine like a Fiat last week. I would say something about my tendonitis, children, gambling habits, age, etc — but the truth is, I've just been burning the candle at both ends and in the middle.
I've got to put out a call for more contributors/writers or complete my human cloning machine.
Great job to FTB and Dr D!

Fiat 600 missing the flywheel cover

Hmmm, Considering that DT said make/model then Im going to go out on a limb and say that its NOT a Fiat..
The back wheels don't look super positive cambered which means that the suspension must be a touch lower so Im going to say its Austrian…
Steyr-Puch 500??
Cheers
Damn you Dr D!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
