What Am I Bidding On? 1978 Ford Mustang V10 Custom

I gotta be honest with you guys…I don’t know what I’m looking at with this next car. It is advertised as being a ’78 Mustang with a V10 that was a multi-time show winning SEMA vehicle, and a Optima Ultimate Street Challenge Car and the photos show several different configurations, one with a finished car like this 2014 MustangsandFords article, but then the pictures change to what can only be described as a hulk of disassembled parts waiting for a barn to be stored for the inevitable 20 years of rust and chicken poop it needs to be a barn find in the year 2040. I love the idea of a Mustang II with custom styling, a full Chebby Corbette C5 Z06 suspension, custom everything, and Triton V10…but I don’t know if that’s what you’ll get as the winner of this next auction. Find this 1978 Ford Mustang V10 custom bidding for $12,100 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go, located in Beaverton, OR via ebay. (Update: On 9/14/2020 the auction closed at $20k, but now it is back listed here with a new auction.)

From the seller:
Car is a multi-time SEMA show display vehicle and was in the top 10 of the inaugural “SEMA Battle of the Builders”. Plus it was in the top 5 for Gran Turismo, and participated in OUSCI (Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational). It was being rebuilt better than before, but project stalled out a few years ago. It’s at the paint stage, but I’m just tapped out of funds and need to recoup a small fraction of the investment

The first and only Mustang II that I love. Looks great!
God bless anyone who can turn a Mustang II into a cool car. This one looked pretty great before and hopefully will look great again soon. Those rear quarters in the “stripped” photo look a lot like modern Mustang quarters to me. I never saw the resemblance between the Mustang II and all the other ‘stang versions until that photo.
The bastard child of a stock Mustang II and a DBS. Agree with byrd – looking good.
It appears the Mustwang 206 ended auction at $20k, but then it was immediately re-listed.
Totally buy, Vince. DT show car. Tax write-off as a business expense. You and CFlo will have it screaming in no time. I will mock it up in DT livery, give me a couple of days. Tell me when to duck as I get a coffee pot thrown at me.
Link in the write up refers to a 6.5L v10. Tritons were 6.8, right? Would you ever have a reason to shorten the stroke on a build like this
It’s probably a type-o. The Triton 6.8 is a hulking heavy brute of an engine, an iron block V10 with the extra height and width associated with overhead cams. Great for shuttle busses and RVs, not the best choice for a pony car. That’s where the desire ends for me on this build, that and the interesting tube chassis…thing.
They did a good job of blending S197 bits with a Mustang II – it’s greater than the sum of its parts. I’d hit that.
Yeah, this is actually pretty fantastic. For your intrepid enthusiast, having cut his car loving teeth in 1985 on a road and track cover featuring a 1970s vantage, this pushes a lot of buttons… At least in its finished form. Just enough Aston – which had just enough mustang-with a goddamn, bet your ass American v8rumble to boot. I wish I had more talents.
