Weekend Match-Up: New 4-Door Sedan for JB1025
Time for a bonus episode Mid Week Match-Up, which should probably be called Weekend Match-Up, but this feature is for JB1025 who is looking for a new daily driver sedan. From JB1025:
Here looking to be midweek victim, my
lease is up on 2013 Honda Accord sport so looking for another 4 door
sedan but open to a coupe Budget is 25k will stay with Japan or Korean
as first choice but open to others, with a lease should cover any
warranty problems. Need an auto trans 4 cyl or V-6. Also open to small
suv Hyundai Tucson class.
I would be happy to have any DT followers to chime in for my search
still out looking was @ the Mazda dealership drove a Mazda 3 hatch and a
CX-5 .was impressed with there stuff so…..ready for some new ideas
and a little DT flack.
DT E-i-C Vince: For my money on a new $25k sedan I think you would do very nicely with a 2016 Mazda 6 — it features a styling exterior, and a 2.5 liter turbo SkyActive inline-4 that puts 184 horsepower into a 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto.
What would you drive? Comments below.
I know it looks very bland from the outside, but the newly redesigned Chrysler 200 is a really smooth driver with nice interior features. You can even get it with AWD. The quality is good enough that you shouldn't have any problems on a lease.
I have a 15 200 limited v6. With nearly 300 hp and 9 forward gears with a decently calibrated paddle shifted tranmission. I have to say mine is damn enteraining to drive in sport mode. In the first four gears it's hard to
Shift fast enough and going into fifth it'll be nearing 95mph and still hauling ass. I've owned the thing since July and put almost 30k km on it. It averages (by the computer) 30.5 mpg mixed driving with my heavy azz foot into it at every light. It did leave me in the middle of a busy intersection in a torrential down pour with my wife's 77 y/o grandmother in the car. It was fixed within three days and hasn't reoccured.
So yeah people are hating the nine gear z
Chrysler built zf but all of its issues seem to be electrical and not internal. I love mine and would recommend one to anyone.
Oh yeah I almost forgot…. its not a damn accord or camry. It got those a two positives going for it too!

Ok, it's old man time! Unless you own a business and write off 100% of the lease as an expense, why lease?
If its for the low monthly payments, who cares how low your payments are, you'll never 'own' a car or any of the equity in the car.
If your car is a 'device' to just get you to work, give up on the 'new and shiny' and go with a complete POS for a while. Save some money and buy a nicer car, then save some more and buy a nicer one. The lease payment + insurance premium is your total cost. Look at what you could save by coughing up $3K initially, with a super low insurance cost and reinvest the savings in a newer, nicer, until you have what you ultimately want. It may sound old school, but hey, I don't have a car payment and drive really nice cars!
"and drive really nice cars!"
not that i'm bragging or anything…
Not bragging, just stating that just cause you start out in a paid for beater, after saving the equivalent of a car payment and high insurance premium it adds up and turns into equity. Really nice is relative. I think they're nice.
Go with the sedan vs the CUV thing. I thought a CX-5 would have more cargo area than a Mazda6 because SUV. Nope. Had a 2015 Mazda 6 service loaner 2 weeks ago, the trunk sacrifices a small amount of vertical space for a much larger width and depth than you'll find in a CUV. It swallowed our jogging stroller, spare kid seat and base, 2 weeks worth of groceries and the in-laws luggage with room to spare. Try that in our CX-5 and the rear seat passengers would be riding with their luggage on their laps and the groceries would get crushed.
Also, the 2.5 Skyactiv-G in the Mazda 6 isn't a turbo.
FWIW we have a 2015 Mazda CX-5 6-spd m/t (which implies sport aka base trim level, 2.0l engine, FWD only). If you have any specific questions about it feel free to ask away.
Same applies to some extent E39 5-series vs E53 X5. The X5 has a tall cargo area but it's shorter than an E39 sedan, and I think smaller overall than an E39 wagon.
Still, when it comes to the small-SUV thing…we paid $6500ish for our 2001 X5 4.4 with recent rebuilt transmission, and even after the $1200 or so I've spent on engine seals and hoses and assorted other crap and even considering 14mpg average, it'd take a very long time to get to the price of a Tucson…
The CX-5 is based on the 3 so it is going to be smaller than the 6. Not sure if the new CX-9 is based on the 6. We bought a CX-5 GT in May and have been happy with it so far. Not like driving a penalty box like the Sienna was.
JB1025 seems to be looking for something other than an Accord, which seems based on my experience to be the best in that segment though I'll admit I haven't driven everything in that range. Like the Mazda6 for one, which just seems a bit awkwardly proportioned to me but I haven't driven it so I'm in no position to comment.
I dunno…don't think much of most of the current Asian-branded product in that arena just on ergonomics, but that's a personal thing.
It would be an overstatement to say that I hate the Ford Fusion with the heat of a thousand suns, but while the interior trim might be a bit nicer I find it less pleasant to drive than the one it replaced.
The Chrysler 200 is okay, but if it came down to a 200 or a year-old 300C for similar money I think I'd lean toward the tank. Similarly Nissan Altima/Maxima vs a recent used G37 on warranty.
Everyone I know with a current VW Passat seems to love it, though the sample size is limited (still larger than I'd expect, they're definitely taking some Camry buyers) I've heard few of the customary VW/Audi glitches, I'm sure they're there but my sample cohort just hasn't hit them yet I guess….
They say the best time to get a deal on a car is the last week of the year.
Manufacturers and dealers want to close out the year strong.
So you are doing the right thing to narrow your choice now.
I would highly recommend test driving a Ford Fusion.
You will be pleasantly surprised!
Kia Optima or Mazda6 – best of breed. Go and drive those before you make your choice.
I have driven a Mazda 3 hatch liked it but had some road noise and rather have the 2.5 motor but only comes with sunroof package which i don't want..Drove the CX-5 better then the Kia Sportage or sister car of the Hyumdai Tucson (better looking)
Drove the 2013 civic base was slow high center console.and the 2016 Accord sport drives so much like my current
car. So will try the Mazda 6 like Mr Wong said not totally in love with portions. Yes looked at something older buy with cash out. I do like the Lexus GS300 1999-2004 but most have 150k or more on the clock yeas a lease is not for everybody and it's my first time going that way. So do have 10K in cash to buy something out right. Thanx to all who chimed in. Kia Optima like the car hate the numb steering ! May look @ VW Passat Thanks Again JB1025
i do like the Ford fusion in looks dept drove previous version as a rental was okay steering was a little hokey had a different turn in it seemed @ higher speed. Use to like some of the Mopar stuff but Fiat has not added anything to the brand after daimler shook it up with mixed results.
