VW Powered: 1960 BMW 700

BMW’s experimentation in the economy car market started long before they acquired the Mini brand — in fact, it started with the Isetta minicar and later moved to rear-engine aircooled BMW 600 and 700 models. This next 700 saloon looks strangely similar to a Glas Isar/Goggomobil T700, but this was before BMW’s acquisition of Hans Glas GmbH and purely coincidence. Find this 1960 BMW 700 with VW engine offered for $10,000 in San Diego, CA via craigslist.

This should be entertaining, probably one of the few engine swaps where a 1600 VW engine has twice the power of the original.
I knew a guy on the NYC art car circuit who drove an Isetta with a VW engine that could pop wheelies whenever you wanted. Or didn’t want for that matter. Also it was covered in fur, but the wheelstands were epic.
This has a long enough wheelbase that the front wheels should stay within pavement proximity.
Was the hair added as a joke after the engine swap as a bad pun – that’s one HAIRY car to drive?
Nichtswurst. It’s hard to see how BMW went from the 507 to this. However, Wikipedia says it was “a sales success at a time when BMW was close to financial ruin”, so maybe good thing I wasnae a BMW executive in the late 50s.
If this Bimmer and a Type III VW were related, this car would be Britney Spears to the VW’s Shakira
Oh hey, the Super Bowl is tomorrow!
