Unusual Baja Style: 1969 Saab 96

The Saab 96 marked the ultimate development of the initial aerospace-inspired and streamlined Ur-SAAB design. True to Saab’s tradition, the 96 remained in production well beyond the introduction of its intended successor, the 99. In fact, production of the 96 extended all the way to 1980, however they never built a convertible-baja-pickup version of the 96. So this guy did it instead. Find this 1969 Saab 96 Baja offered for $6,700 via saabnet.

This is a very special car built by Arne Gunnarsson with many of his Baja Saab modifications. I fell in love but now winter is coming and it is not suited to New England. If it doesn’t find a good new home, I will have to fabricate a roof! The car is 100% sorted and operates perfectly. The engine and trans are the smoothest, quietest I have driven in 40 years of 2-strokes. It passed Mass state safety inspection easily. It has rebuilt 850cc 3 carb engine, rebuilt trans. It has a ton of new parts including: rotors, calipers, brake lines and hoses, bushings, boots, Bilstein shocks, e-brake cables, cap, rotor, lens, tires etc. The car is modified with a 1 ft shorter wheel base, fuel cell with working gas gage under panel behind seats, steering knuckles shortened for longer springs, huge tires, reinforced control arms and shock mounts, ATE brake booster and rebuilt Master, fiberglass hood. No heater or wipers. If you are over 5’9″ it’s a tight fit. I was going to put Sonett seats in for more space. The current windshield height puts wind directly in your face over 40 mph. Note, it is titled as a 1969 96 but appears to be a mix of several years. I am open to offers and or trades for Saabs or interesting Saab stuff.
