Type 3Camino: 1968 Volkswagen Not-so-Squareback

The Type 3 was a compact offering from Volkswagen that was sold from 1961 through 1973 in Notchback, Fastback, Squareback, and Sedan Delivery (like a wagon, but no windows) variants. Volkswagen never sold a pickup truck version (the Caddy pickup didn’t arrive until the 1979 Rabbit/Golf platform) but that didn’t stop this next builder from making an El Camino version of a Squareback. Find this 1968 Volkswagen Not-so-Squareback offered for $15,000 in Siloam Springs, AR via ebay.

This would be one to check out in person to see how the work was done, but as a custom it’s pretty cool. It looks like it could have been a Hot VWs magazine car back in the 80s/90s. Just don’t expect the capacity to be much as a truck. It’s going to be sloooooow loaded.
Interesting things I see at quick glance: the gas filler is under the hood, which is the way they were through 1967. In 1968, VW switched to the more modern filler door in the fender. Either this is actually a pre-‘68 or someone decided to retrofit in order to smooth out the fender, which is likely. Also, the steering wheel is from a ’72-‘73. The high back seats and door panels are ‘68-on.
I admit being a bit wary of so much hyperbole mixed with caps lock. A Porsche type engine the runs too good and so powerful it will cruise at 65-70mph? Wow! Sign me up!
It looks to be clean and really well done and could easily stand on its own four wheels without all the superlatives.
Every air-cooled flat four VW engine of this era is a “Porsche type†engine. Also, coincidentally, every Porsche engine of the era is a VW type engine. Funny how that is. It’s almost like there’s some connection between VW and Porsche. 😉
